How we create our recipes
Every recipe on Recetas Caninas goes through the same process. We explain it so you know exactly what is behind what you cook.
THE RULE
No recipe may contain an ingredient that could harm a dog. This is not an intention: it is a technical rule. Only ingredients from a closed safe list can be used, and the site will not publish a recipe that breaks the rule.
Left off the list are, among others: onion, garlic, leeks and chives; grapes and raisins; chocolate and cocoa; coffee and tea; xylitol and any other sweetener; macadamia nuts and walnuts; avocado; alcohol; raw yeast dough; added salt and sugar; spices; deli meats and cured sausages; store-bought broth or bouillon cubes; cooked bones and raw pork.
Balance, not just good ingredients
- Measured calcium. Main-meal recipes include ground eggshell so that the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio falls between 1.1 and 1.8, as canine nutrition guidelines recommend.
- Organ meat with a limit. Liver does not exceed 5 % of the animal portion (10 % as an absolute maximum) because of its vitamin A.
- Omega-3 from oily fish or salmon oil where it fits.
- Honesty about the limits. A homemade recipe does not provide every vitamin and mineral on its own: if it is his daily food, we recommend a vitamin and mineral supplement made for homemade diets. In puppies, the calcium and phosphorus needed for growth are completed by the supplement your vet prescribes.
Portions calculated, not guessed
We calculate the calories in each recipe from the grams of each ingredient (using data from the Spanish BEDCA database and the USDA) and estimate the final weight after cooking. The daily portion comes from resting energy (RER = 70 × weight in kg0.75) multiplied by the factor for each life stage, according to the NRC (2006) and WSAVA.
What we do not do
We do not give diagnoses or replace your vet. For kidney disease, urinary problems, pancreatitis or allergies, our recipes and guides support your vet's plan; they never replace it.
