Can Dogs Eat Apples?
Yes. Apples are a safe, light fruit for dogs, always without the core and seeds, which contain amygdalin.
What it gives your dog
Apples are 85% water, about 52 kcal per 100 g, and rich in soluble fiber (pectin), which helps regulate digestion. They provide some vitamin C and antioxidants from the skin. Their crunch appeals to many dogs and makes them a good low-calorie treat, even for dogs that need to lose weight.
The seeds contain amygdalin, which releases cyanide when chewed. A couple of seeds swallowed by accident aren't a problem because the amount is tiny, but there's no reason to give them, and the hard core can choke a small dog. Remove the stem too.
How to serve it
- Washed, with no core, seeds or stem
- With or without the skin, in chunks or slices
- Grated or as homemade unsweetened applesauce
- Frozen in small cubes in summer
How much can they eat?
Small dog (under 10 kg / 22 lb): 2-4 small pieces (20-30 g, about 1 oz). Medium (10-25 kg / 22-55 lb): a quarter of an apple (40-50 g). Large (over 25 kg / 55 lb): half an apple (80-100 g). Treats and extras shouldn't go over 10% of what your dog eats in a day.
Risks
- Seeds with amygdalin (don't give them)
- Hard core: choking in small dogs
- Too much at once: gas or soft stool
- Store-bought applesauce and juice with sugar
Frequently asked questions
Is it bad if my dog eats apple seeds?
A few seeds swallowed by accident aren't dangerous: a dog would have to chew a huge number to release a worrying amount of cyanide. Still, always remove them along with the core, because they add nothing and, if your dog eats whole apples often, the amount adds up. Keep an eye on dogs that steal fallen apples.
Can a dog with diarrhea eat apples?
A little grated or cooked apple may help because its pectin helps firm up the stool, but it doesn't replace a bland diet or a vet visit if the diarrhea lasts more than a day or there's blood. For dogs with diarrhea, peel it and keep the amount small.
