Can Dogs Eat Black Pepper?
No. Don't add pepper to your dog's food. A pinch in a dish isn't poisoning, but piperine irritates their stomach, nose and eyes, and it gives them nothing.
Why it's dangerous
Black and white pepper contain piperine, the compound that makes them hot. In dogs it irritates the lining of the stomach and intestine and can cause vomiting, diarrhea or belly pain if they eat a noticeable amount. Inhaled, it causes sneezing and coughing, and if it gets in their eyes, stinging and tearing. Dogs don't need seasoning: with their sense of smell, plain food already appeals to them.
Cayenne, chili peppers and other hot spices are worse: capsaicin irritates the mouth and digestive tract much more. The other risk is spice blends and meat rubs, which almost always contain salt and garlic or onion powder, both toxic to dogs. That's why homemade dog food gets no pepper and no spices. Don't confuse it with bell pepper, the vegetable, which dogs can eat cooked.
Is any amount safe?
None added. Leftovers with a pinch of pepper don't usually cause problems; what you need to avoid is seasoning their food, hot spices and letting them get into the shaker or grinder.
Risks
- Stomach irritation: vomiting and diarrhea
- Sneezing, coughing and eye irritation if inhaled
- Hot spices (cayenne, chili): far more irritating
- Seasonings with salt and garlic or onion powder
Frequently asked questions
What happens if my dog eats food with black pepper?
If it's leftovers from your plate with a pinch of pepper, usually nothing, or mild discomfort. What matters is checking what else was in it: salt, garlic, onion or sauces are usually more of a problem than the pepper. Watch for vomiting or diarrhea, and call your vet if symptoms persist.
Can dogs eat bell peppers?
Yes, bell pepper is something else: a vegetable, not a spice. Red bell pepper, cooked and seeded, provides vitamin C and beta-carotene and can be given in small amounts. What dogs shouldn't eat are hot peppers like chili or cayenne, or paprika, which is a spice.
Does black pepper keep dogs away?
Some people use it as a repellent to stop dogs peeing in a certain spot, but it isn't a good idea: sniffing it irritates their nose, eyes and airways, and they may also lick it. To stop a dog marking a spot, cleaning with an enzymatic cleaner and positive reinforcement work better.
