Can Dogs Eat Butter?

NoMild toxicity

Better not. A lick is not a poisoning, but butter is about 80 % fat and gives a dog nothing. In quantity it can cause vomiting, diarrhea and pancreatitis.

Why it's dangerous

Butter is around 80-82 % fat, mostly saturated, with about 720-750 kcal per 100 g: a 250 g block (a little over two US sticks) is about 1,800 kcal, what a 10 kg (22 lb) dog eats in three days. Salted butter adds salt on top. It has little lactose, so that is not the problem; the fat is.

A large dose of fat all at once is one of the best-known triggers of pancreatitis in dogs, a painful inflammation of the pancreas that can be serious, especially in predisposed breeds like the Miniature Schnauzer, in overweight dogs or in dogs who have had it before. The most common outcome after a butter theft is gastroenteritis with vomiting and greasy diarrhea. Add to that what usually comes with butter: baked goods and cookies that may contain chocolate, raisins, macadamia nuts or xylitol, and the foil or paper wrapper, which can cause a blockage if swallowed.

Is any amount safe?

None as a habit. If your dog licked the tip of the knife or a bit of toast, nothing will happen to a healthy dog. Do not use it to give pills or as a treat: a small piece of cooked chicken or of mild fresh cheese works just as well.

Risks

  • Gastroenteritis: vomiting and greasy diarrhea
  • Pancreatitis, especially in small, overweight or predisposed dogs
  • Salted butter: more salt
  • Swallowed wrapper: intestinal blockage
  • Baked goods, cookies and doughs made with butter that contain chocolate, raisins, macadamia nuts or xylitol

Frequently asked questions

What happens if my dog eats a stick of butter?

Most likely they will have vomiting and greasy diarrhea for a day or two. The serious risk is pancreatitis, which can appear up to four days later and is more likely in small or overweight dogs or dogs who have had it before. Call the vet, especially if they also swallowed the wrapper. Do not make them vomit.

Is peanut butter just as bad?

No, they are different things. Peanut butter is ground peanuts and contains no dairy butter. One made from 100 % peanuts, with no salt, no sugar and above all no xylitol, can be given in small amounts. But it is also very high in fat, so measure it in teaspoons. Always check the label: xylitol is highly toxic to dogs.

Can I use butter to give my dog a pill?

Better not. A small dab now and then is not dangerous for a healthy dog, but if the medication is daily the fat adds up, and for dogs with digestive problems or pancreatitis it is a bad idea. A small piece of cooked chicken, a bit of mild fresh cheese, a little banana or the pill pockets sold at vet clinics work just as well.
