Can Dogs Eat Coconut?

In moderation

In moderation. Coconut meat isn't toxic, but it's very high in fat, so only a small piece now and then. Coconut water, in small amounts. The shell, never.

What it gives your dog

Fresh coconut meat has about 33 g of fat per 100 g, mostly saturated (rich in lauric acid and medium-chain triglycerides), and about 350 kcal. That fat is the reason to give it in moderation: too much can cause diarrhea, add pounds or, in dogs prone to it, contribute to pancreatitis. It provides fiber and some manganese, but its supposed “miracle” effects on skin or immunity haven't been shown in dogs.

Coconut water is rich in potassium (about 250 mg per 100 ml): a little does no harm, but a lot can upset the mineral balance, especially in dogs with kidney or heart problems. The hard shell and the outer husk can't be digested and can cause a blockage. Sweetened shredded coconut for baking and coconut drinks usually contain sugar.

How to serve it

  • Fresh meat in small pieces or unsweetened shredded
  • Plain, unsweetened coconut water, just a few sips
  • Never the shell or the outer husk
  • Avoid sweetened shredded coconut and coconut drinks

How much can they eat?

Coconut meat: small dog (under 10 kg / 22 lb) about 5 g (a piece the size of a fingernail), medium (10-25 kg / 22-55 lb) 10 g, large (over 25 kg / 55 lb) 15-20 g. Coconut water: 30 ml (1 fl oz), 60 ml (2 fl oz) and 100 ml (about 3.5 fl oz) respectively, occasionally. All within the 10% of calories for extras.

Risks

  • Fat: diarrhea, weight gain or pancreatitis
  • Shell and husk: blockage
  • Too much potassium from a lot of coconut water
  • Sweetened coconut

Frequently asked questions

Is coconut oil good for dogs?

It's credited with many benefits for skin, coat and digestion, but the evidence in dogs is thin. It's almost pure fat and adds lots of calories: one tablespoon has about 120 kcal. If you want to improve their skin and coat, salmon oil, rich in omega-3, has more support. Check with your vet first if your dog has had pancreatitis.

Can dogs drink coconut water?

Yes, in small amounts and plain, with no sugar. It's rich in potassium, so don't give a lot or use it to replace water. A few sips as a summer treat are fine. For dogs with kidney or heart disease, it's better to avoid it unless your vet says otherwise.
