Can Dogs Eat Kiwi?

In moderation

In moderation. Kiwi is safe peeled and in small pieces, but a whole one can cause choking, and in larger amounts its fiber and acidity often cause diarrhea.

What it gives your dog

Kiwi provides fiber, vitamin C, vitamin K, potassium and about 61 kcal per 100 g. Its tiny black seeds aren't a problem. It contains actinidin, an enzyme that helps digest protein but is also why some people and some dogs feel an itchy mouth.

The biggest risk is mechanical: a whole kiwi is exactly the size to get stuck in the throat of a medium or large dog that swallows it without chewing. The fuzzy skin is hard to digest. And because of its fiber and acidity, more than a few pieces often ends in soft stool.

How to serve it

  • Peeled
  • In thin slices or small cubes
  • Never whole
  • Start with a small piece to see how it sits

How much can they eat?

Small dog (under 10 kg / 22 lb): 1-2 thin slices. Medium (10-25 kg / 22-55 lb): a quarter of a kiwi. Large (over 25 kg / 55 lb): half a kiwi. Now and then and within the 10% of calories for extras.

Risks

  • Choking if swallowed whole
  • Diarrhea from the fiber and acidity
  • Skin that's hard to digest
  • Itchy mouth in sensitive dogs

Frequently asked questions

Can dogs eat kiwi skin?

Better peeled. The skin isn't toxic, but it's fuzzy, rough and hard to digest, and it can irritate the mouth or stomach. Also, kiwi with the skin on tends to be given whole or in big pieces, which is exactly when the choking risk is highest. Peel it and cut it into thin slices or small cubes.

Is kiwi good for constipation in dogs?

Its fiber may help soften the stool, but don't use it as a treatment on its own: a dog that hasn't pooped in more than two days or strains without success needs a vet, because there could be a blockage. For everyday use, cooked pumpkin is a gentler option and easier to dose.
