Can Dogs Eat Pasta?

In moderation

Yes, a little plain cooked pasta with no salt and no sauce is safe for a healthy dog. What usually causes harm is the sauce: marinara, carbonara, Bolognese or pesto contain garlic, onion, fat or cheese.

What it gives your dog

Pasta is wheat flour and water (or egg, in fresh pasta): mostly starch, with about 150-160 kcal per 100 g cooked. Well cooked, it is digested without trouble and can be an occasional carbohydrate, but it offers nothing that rice, oats or sweet potato do not offer better, and too much leads to weight gain.

The problem is how people eat it. Bolognese and tomato sauces usually contain onion and garlic; carbonara, bacon, cheese and cream; pesto, garlic and nuts. And raw pasta, hard and dry, is not digested and can break into pieces that irritate. If your dog is allergic or sensitive to wheat, better avoid it.

How to serve it

  • Cooked in unsalted water, al dente or slightly soft
  • No sauce, no cheese and no oil
  • Short pasta (macaroni, penne) is better than long spaghetti for dogs who gulp
  • Mixed with their protein and vegetables, not as a meal on its own
  • Never raw pasta

How much can they eat?

Occasionally: small dog (under 10 kg / 22 lb), 15-30 g of cooked pasta (2-3 tablespoons); medium dog (10-25 kg / 22-55 lb), 40-70 g (about 1/3-1/2 cup); large dog (over 25 kg / 55 lb), 70-100 g (about 1/2-3/4 cup).

Risks

  • Sauces with garlic, onion, fat, cheese or spices
  • Calories: weight gain if given often
  • Raw pasta: indigestible
  • Wheat allergy or sensitivity
  • Stuffed pasta with onion, garlic or aged cheeses

Frequently asked questions

Can dogs eat pasta with tomato sauce?

Better not. Jarred or homemade tomato sauce almost always contains onion, garlic, salt and sugar, and onion and garlic damage dogs' red blood cells. If your dog ate a little from your plate, most likely nothing will happen, but if it was a large amount or they are a small dog, check with your vet. For them, plain cooked pasta only.

Can dogs eat raw pasta?

No. Dry raw pasta is very hard, dogs do not digest it and it can snap into sharp-edged pieces that irritate the mouth and stomach. If your dog ate a few raw macaroni off the floor, they will usually pass them, but a whole box can swell with stomach fluid and cause vomiting. In that case, call the vet.
