Can Dogs Eat Beef?

Yes

Yes. Lean, cooked, unseasoned beef is a good source of protein, iron and zinc for dogs.

What it gives your dog

Lean cuts of beef (round, sirloin tip or ground beef with less than 10 % fat) provide about 20-21 g of protein per 100 g, well-absorbed heme iron, zinc and vitamin B12. Dogs find it very appetizing, and it is the base of many homemade dog stews.

It has two drawbacks. Fatty cuts and fat trimmings are high in calories and can upset dogs prone to pancreatitis. And beef is the protein most often reported as a cause of food allergy in dogs, ahead of dairy and chicken: if you notice itching, ear infections or soft stools after you start feeding it, mention it to your vet.

How to serve it

  • Boiled, simmered in water or cooked in a dry pan with no oil, well done
  • Lean cuts; trim off any visible fat
  • No salt, garlic, onion, wine or spices (no leftover stew or barbecue)
  • Ground or in small cubes
  • No cooked bones

How much can they eat?

As an extra (no more than 10 % of the day's calories): small dog (under 10 kg / 22 lb), 15-30 g of cooked lean beef (0.5-1 oz), about 2-4 cubes of 2 cm (3/4 in); medium dog (10-25 kg / 22-55 lb), 30-60 g (1-2 oz); large dog (over 25 kg / 55 lb), 60-90 g (2-3 oz). As the main protein in a homemade recipe, follow its amounts.

Risks

  • Fat and fatty cuts: gastroenteritis and pancreatitis
  • Stews and leftovers with onion, garlic, wine or salt
  • Food allergy (beef is one of the most common)
  • Cooked bones from soups or roasts

Frequently asked questions

Can dogs eat ground beef?

Yes, cooked and drained. Choose lean ground beef (the label shows the percentage; ideally 90/10 or leaner) and avoid seasoned burger mixes or pre-made patties, which contain salt, preservatives and sometimes onion or spices. Brown it in a pan with no oil, pour off the fat it releases and let it cool before serving.

Can dogs eat raw beef?

In a well-planned raw (BARF) diet, yes, but it carries risks that cooking reduces: bacteria such as Salmonella or E. coli and some parasites. If you feed it raw, buy fresh meat from a trusted source, freeze it for at least a week at −18 °C (0 °F) (that reduces parasites, not bacteria), thaw it in the fridge and wash surfaces and hands well. For puppies and dogs with weakened immunity, cooked is better.

Can puppies eat beef?

Yes, cooked, lean and in small pieces or ground, once they eat solid food. As a treat there is no problem. If you want it to be the base of their daily food, the recipe needs calcium in the right proportion and a vitamin-mineral supplement, because meat alone has a lot of phosphorus and very little calcium, and that affects bones while they are growing.
