Can Dogs Eat Broccoli?

In moderation

Yes, in small amounts: boiled or steamed, in small florets, and no more than 10 % of what your dog eats in a day. In excess, its isothiocyanates irritate the stomach, and the stalks can be a choking hazard.

What it gives your dog

Broccoli provides fiber, vitamin C, vitamin K, folic acid and potassium with very few calories (about 35 kcal per 100 g). But it contains glucosinolates which, when chewed or chopped, turn into isothiocyanates: compounds that in high doses irritate the lining of the stomach and intestine. That is why the usual advice is to keep it under 10 % of the daily portion. Above 25 % is often cited as potentially toxic, although no exact dose has been firmly established.

The other risk is mechanical: tough stalks and stems can get stuck in the esophagus, especially in small dogs or dogs who gulp. Like other cruciferous vegetables, it also causes gas.

How to serve it

  • Boiled or steamed for 5-6 minutes
  • In small florets or chopped; the stalk peeled, cooked and cut into small pieces
  • No salt, oil, garlic or cheese
  • As an addition to their food, not the base of it

How much can they eat?

No more than 10 % of their daily portion: small dog (under 10 kg / 22 lb), 1-3 small florets (10-20 g); medium dog (10-25 kg / 22-55 lb), 20-40 g (about 1/4-1/2 cup chopped); large dog (over 25 kg / 55 lb), 40-60 g (about 1/2-2/3 cup chopped). A few times a week is better than daily.

Risks

  • Too many isothiocyanates: digestive irritation, vomiting and diarrhea
  • Stalks and large pieces: choking or esophageal blockage
  • Gas
  • Broccoli with cheese sauce or other sauces

Frequently asked questions

Can dogs eat raw broccoli?

They can, in small pieces, but boiled or steamed broccoli is easier to digest and causes less gas. Raw stalks are tougher and the choking risk is higher. If you give it raw, stick to small florets, never whole stalks, and to the same limited amount: no more than 10 % of what they eat in a day.

Can dogs eat broccoli stalks?

The stalks are edible and nutritious, but they are the most dangerous part for a dog if given whole, because they can get stuck in the esophagus. Peel them, cook them until tender and cut them into small cubes or grate them. For small dogs or dogs who eat greedily, it is better to give only the florets.

Can puppies eat broccoli?

Yes, in small amounts, cooked and chopped, as part of a varied diet. It offers nothing special for a puppy and their stomach is sensitive to gas, so start with one small floret and check that they tolerate it. What is not a good idea is using it as a frequent treat or as the main ingredient of their food.
